Matt Ryan

2 January 2009

nbsp; Romo didn’t come out of college with the pedigree of an Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, or Matt Ryan, to name a few.  He needed a few seasons of grooming just to resemble an NFL QB.  Everyone needs to be patient with him.  Even Peyton Manning took several years before he had post-season success.  And Romo doesn’t even have an ounce of the same pedigree that the Manning’s have!  As for the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl if Crayton didn’t drop that sure TD pass…we will never know?  But, I think that the Cowboys have something with Romo…let’s wait a few years before we label him a bust.  From where he came from…he’s already out-performed anyone’s expectations!

2 seed, with a 1st round bye.  That’s absolutely incredible!  Rookie QB Matt Ryan has played well all season, and he looks like a franchise QB for many years to come.  Atlanta wins big here with much at stake!  Atlanta 27, St. Louis 13.

rly the better squad.  Offensively, though, the Falcons have more star talent (Michael Turner, Matt Ryan, Roddy White) than the Vikings, so, again, a big effort from Adrian Peterson will likely be the key to victory.

That's not to take anything away from the incredible season they've had.  Matt Ryan should be in the running for Rookie of the Year.  With the NFC being so good this season a 10-6 or 9-7 team may not make it.  I attribute the youth and inexperience of the Falcons to be the contributing factor.  They haven't made the playoffs since 2004 and the current squad has only a handful of players on both sides of the ball that were on that team, one of the reasons for the 8-5 record thus far.

looks like a gamer! Seriously though, he’s carrying this team on his back.

WINNER: Matt Ryan (ATL)—Quarterback is the hardest position to play in football. It’s almost unheard of for a rookie QB to come in and play on even an average level. Ryan is playing better than a lot of vets right now and is the biggest reason they have a winning record. His potential is limitless.

Quarter back Matt Ryan put up his best yards thrown as an NFL starter with 301 yards. The game started out very well for Atlanta with the birds moving the ball with ease on the 4th ranked rush defense in the league. It was difficult for running back Michael Turner to get his legs moving with the Bears stout front line. So, Ryan had to take matters into his own hands and go by air. Throwing the ball worked perfectly in between the 20's, but once the Falcons got to the redzone, the drives seemed to stall. That is where the foot of kicker Jason Elam came into play. Elam was 5 for 6 kicking, with the lone miss which was crucial that let the Bears back into the ballgame with quarter back Kyle Orton throwing the go ahead touchdown to wide receiver Rashied Davis with 11 seconds on the clock. Right about this time I threw my recliner pillow on the floor and said, "Not again, this always happens to Atlanta." Boy was I wrong.

I was among many  on draft day to hesitate when Matt Ryan's name was called with the third pick in the first round. I thought going defense with the first pick and selecting Glen Dorsey was the way to go. That is why I write stories and not selecting players for million dollar organizations. Ryan's stats so far through five games resembles a rookie, but he has led the team to a 3-2 start. The reason for the 3-2 start is because of his sense of presence in the huddle. Ryan plays like a 4-year veteran. For a rookie he has had the ability to read what defenses have thrown at him. He also works the no huddle to a charm. Through five games Ryan has a 75.3 rating while tallying 3 touchdowns to two interceptions. He has thrown for 863 yards thus far.

Plenty of speculation had been made as to whether or not Mike Smith was the right man for the job.  The Falcons were in a bind last season when Bobby Petrino left three-quarters of the way through the season.  While Petrino left the Falcons in bad shape, the team stayed together.

What better way to start my life as a sports blogger than this. It is my opening post, yet more importantly to the sports fan it is Pro Football Eve!!! That's right.  Football is back and the 5 month holiday is "The Most wonderful Time of the Year", but only some of us will get presents. Santa Coughlin may be in the giving mood again. It is more likely however,  that Giselle will lead the Patriot fans in a Marilyn Monroe inspired "Santa Bra-dy", asking for that "one thing, a ring".

In other news:

The Michael Vick era has come and gone with the arrival of quarterback Matt Ryan. Ryan had a 105.7 passer rating while completing 9-15 passes for 113 yards and one touchdown. One might say it is only preseason. Yes, that is correct. But watching the game and seeing the poise and confidence Ryan displayed while under center with the Jaguars first team defense on the field has to make you feel good for the future. Ryan's confidence is only going to grow with the more reps and playing time he gets.

ason at the top of the depth chart threw exactly one completion--to linebacker Michael Boley.  Matt Ryan's first series went three-and-out and included an unspectacular intentional grounding penalty when Boley (again) came through the line and applied pressure.  Ryan rebounded in the first series of the second half, finding Roddy White for a 60-yard TD pass.

f the LB corps with him.

Sam Baker, on the other hand, is supposed to be Matt Ryan's best friend; the tackle out of USC is supposed to be protecting Matt Ryan's blind side.  Everybody knows he has short arms, and so everybody expected a rough transition to the pro game to begin with.  Some people don't think Baker will start until after the bye.  But if he's a no-show in camp, the question has to be asked:  Will Baker see the field at all?  While a season on the bench might give Baker a chance to devote more attention to that fine palette of mountain-man face-hair he's been cultivating, it would seriously hurt the Falcons' attempts to rebuild a battered franchise.  If Baker's going to be a tackle in the NFL, he needs the opportunity to be a tackle in the NFL.  I know a lot of us really are pulling for the beard, but it's time to weigh costs against benefits, people.

marks for a team in a rebuilding phase.  The 2008 Atlanta Falcons are no exception.  Will Matt Ryan start week 1?  Is Sam Baker an elite (or even starting) left tackle at the NFL level?  Looking beyond these common questions, however, lies another set of questions, the resolution to which will go as far as any other in determining the Falcons success in 2008 and beyond.  These questions revolve around the guys you haven’t heard much about.  That you haven’t heard about them is the scary part.
